Home to over 1.3 million people, Adelaide offers cosmopolitan living without the crowds.

The city is known as a great place to raise a family and for offering an easy laid-back lifestyle.

If you love culture, in most usual years, there's always something happening and, Adelaide's moniker as the Festival City is well-deserved. Take Mad March for example.

Adelaide has beautiful warm weather for nine months of the year and even the winters are mild. There are many beaches close to the city centre and they can be enjoyed all year round.

Don't forget Adelaide has one of the best wine regions in its backyard. The Barossa Valley is around 70 kilometres away, or just over an hour drive, north of Adelaide. McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley are also within easy reach. You can also enjoy the serenity at the world's largest open-range zoo - Monarto Zoo.

What gives Adelaide the added advantage: It is an affordable and friendly place to live. Your entire wage isn't spent on rent and you are only ever one step removed from someone you know.

The median house price in Metropolitan Adelaide is $442,691. Compared to Sydney's median of $872,934 and Melbourne's $689,099, Adelaide offers good value city-living.

Like most Australian cities, property prices are expected to continue to climb in 2021. According to RiskWise Property Research, house prices in Adelaide are expected to increase by between five and eight per cent next year.

What's not to love? Everyone knows everyone. While this can be a reason to like the city, it can also be a reason not to. There's no privacy. Imagine heading out on a date and you look over to see your grandma, high school friend, boss or whoever sitting on the next table - that's the reality of a small city.

Finding employment here can be difficult and the unemployment rate in Adelaide is above the national average. If you are thinking of making the move here, it might be best to secure employment before you leave.

However, if you are one of the growing legions of virtual workers not tied to an office location, there should be nothing stopping you from making the move here.

Adelaide has great beaches but the decent waves are a good drive away. However, one of South Australia's best-kept secrets, the Fleurieu Peninsula is just a 45-minute drive from Adelaide.

Do you need a car? Traffic around Adelaide is much lighter than you would be used to if you live in Melbourne or Sydney. It only takes you 15 minutes to cross the city, not hours like other major cities. And peak hour is just that - one hour of madness not four.

Public transport around the city is very convenient and you'll notice inner-city trams weaving through the CBD. Many city transport services are free (including buses) making daily commuting very affordable.

You can also hop on your bike to get to work as Adelaide is bicycle-friendly.

Are a first home buyer: Just a 40-minute commute to Adelaide, is the township Nairne and the national winner of ME's top regional towns in Australia for first home buyers.

Nairne is followed closely by sister town Mount Barker in fourth position, both are in the picturesque Adelaide Hills.

"Nairne has a vibrant and growing community expected to reach 6,200 by the year 2036; good access to hospitals and schools; spectacular surrounds in wine-growing country; and heritage streets that give it a 'lost to time' quality," ME's consulting demographer, Chris McNeill said.

"South Australia has deservedly outperformed. It's about time it was recognised. And with relatively affordable house prices, what's not to love," McNeill said.

Have money to spend: Some of the suburbs at the top end of the market include Toorak Gardens, Malvern, Glen Osmond, Unley Park, Glen Osmond, St Peters, Springfield, Gilberton, Hyde Park, Burnside and Fitzroy.

The prestige market within metropolitan Adelaide has a typical starting price point of $3 million, according to Herron Todd White residential, and hits the ceiling at $4.5 million.

Are looking for lifestyle: Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills ranked as the most liveable metropolitan areas in Australia in a new national survey by Ipsos Market Research.

14,0000 Australians were asked to select the top five attributes they believe makes somewhere a good place to live. Feeling safe, affordable decent housing and high-quality health services came out as the three most important.

Participants were also asked how well their local area performed across 16 liveability attributes. On Ipsos's 'Liveability Index', Adelaide (Central and Hills) earned a ranking of 71.5. It was the only metropolitan location in the country that rated above average across all 16 liveability metrics.
