Mundulla travelled to Mount Gambier for the third time in a month to play West Port at McDonald Park on Sunday.
After a hot week the players enjoyed a cooling breeze in good conditions and kicked into the wind in the first term.
The Tigers had made a habit of starting well and did so again to immediately go forward through Mel Jarrett, Tessa Marra and Emily Moxon to find Amy Bruce for an opening goal. Tracey and Dana Poulton were in the play and Bruce again ran in for a minor score before T. Poulton passed to Emily Moxon who goaled.
Mundulla had all the play and their ability to get numbers quickly to the contest and apply pressure was outstanding. Emma Moritz’s strong work in the packs allowed the runners to get free and Jarrett was a great avenue to attack on the wing. Bruce dominated up forward with T. and D. Poulton both creating opportunities as Mundulla went to the first break leading 2-4 to 0-1.
Kicking with wind in the second term Jarrett again got the ball forward to Moxon who took a good mark then found Jenna Kennett for a minor score. Bruce scored her second goal after receiving from Jarrett, and then Moxon kicked a classy goal on the left foot to see Mundulla open up a good lead.
Kelsey Hinge on the wing racked up a heap of possessions and Carlee Feder with Jayde Barton were prominent as Mundulla stayed in attack but burnt a lot of chances with poor finishing. Hinge found Nat Twigden who passed to Barton for a goal and Paige Richards kicked another after intercepting a kick in. Mundulla’s accuracy on goal from the previous week had deserted them as they registered 4-7 in the second quarter to lead 6-11 to 0-1 at half time.
West-Port stepped up the pressure after half time to kick a couple of early goals. Moritz, Moxon and T. Poulton were up to task as the play became a tough battle around the packs and Mundulla, despite some good passages, wasted many opportunities to get forward.
Marra and Twigden were good players along with Hailee Witmitz, Mel Maddern and Feder in defence to stop many West Port attacks. Moritz continued to be a strong player around the midfield and Richards provided some good run but the Tigers remained scoreless in the quarter . ¾ time scores 6-11 to 2-3.
West-Port scrambled the ball forward to score an early goal off the ground to give them some hope but Marra, Twigden and T Poulton applied good pressure to get the ball forward to Moxon for a goal.
Witmitz came out of defence to find Jarrett and good play from T. Poulton and Twigden allowed Kennett to mark on the line and goal. Marra and Moritz in the midfield had been good players all game as West Port continued good pressure. A ball up in the goal square resulted in T. Poulton snapping a goal on the left foot and Richards kicked the final goal of the game after another good run and good work from Moxon.
Mundulla would be happy with the win in a tough game but wasted a lot of good passages of play around the ground.
Emma Moritz, Nat Twigden, Tracey Poulton, Tess Marra, Emily Moxon and Amy Bruce were consistent good players all day.
Goals E. Moxon 3, A. Bruce 2, P. Richards 2, T. Poulton 1, J Kennett 1, J Barton 1.
