Granite Ridge Angus Stud will hold its 12th on property bull sale on Friday, February 8, 2019 at noon. You will be spoiled for choice as the sale bulls are the best ever.
Growth and carcase weight are still the number one priority for the Granite Ridge herd, as all breeders are still paid by weight, whether you sell weaners, steers or bullocks.
There has been a move to breed smaller cattle, but when you speak to the abattoirs, they consistently say they prefer an animal that yields a higher carcase weight.
The cost for processing a smaller animal is the same as that for a bigger animal and therefore the return for a heavier carcase is higher.
This has been proven with the steer buyback program. The steers go to Montrose Feedlot (Moree, NSW) where they are grown out, up to 1000kg, for top-end export markets. Two B-double loads this year killed out at an average of 64 per cent carcase and the abattoir contacted the Montrose Feedlot, asking them to send more like them (see accompanying photo).
The quickest way to improve your herd is to purchase the best bull you can afford.
There are many outstanding growth and carcase sires featured this year, highlighted by sons of Ayvale Jagger, who are consistently early calving sound, deep and thick. Jagger is in the top 1 per cent of the breed for all growth EBVs as well as carcase weight which is +87, being in the top 1-2 per cent for all $ indexes.
A new sire this year is Rennylea K447 - his sons have extra length and excellent carcase quality. Strong growth, with a carcase weight in the top 1 per cent and $ Indexes in the top 1-2 per cent, being +$192 for heavy grain.
The first sons of Granite Ridge Kaiser K26, the $52,000 Foe son that sold in 2016, will be offered this year. He is a true growth bull, being in the Top 1 per cent for 200 Day, 400 Day and 600 Day, as well as carcase weight which is +83. Kaiser also sports the Top 1-2 per cent of the breed for all $ indexes.
Sons of MM Doc F159 – a powerhouse sire with top growth and a carcase weight of +91. Other sires to look out for are MM Tex K51, GR Kalahai K66 and the Texas boys - Western Express K524 and All Black J600.
Many years of selective mating, choosing the right sire for each individual female, has produced a truly elite cow herd.
Granite Ridge does not breed for one or two top females but for a whole herd of outstanding cows who each has the potential to produce a bull that will be a strong herd improver for all cattle operations.
It is the maternal power that makes the Granite Ridge bulls exceptional.
