Tatiara for 2019 Agricultural Town of the Year

Does the Tatiara have what it takes to be crowned South Australia’s Agricultural Town of the Year?

Bordertown local workers Sam and Mollie told the Chronicle they believe the Tatiara has many great qualities that would qualify them for the Agricultural Town of the Year. 

“We have so many things here that make the Tatiara such a great community,’ Mollie said. 

“We have Clayton Farm, we have the lake and we have a really close-knit community. The Tatiara embodies so many great things about Australian country towns.

“I think the Tatiara definitely has what it takes.”

Nominations are currently open for the inaugural award which aims to shine light on the vital role agriculture and primary industries play in regional communities.

Part of the 2019 South Australian Regional Showcase program, the award is heavily backed by Primary Industries and Regional Development minister Tim Whetstone, who is encouraging communities to nominate their towns. 

“The South Australian Agricultural Town of the Year Award is all about recognising and celebrating the role agriculture and other primary industries, such as forestry and fisheries, play in the economic and social fabric of our regional communities, and the innovation and diversity that come from these towns,” Minister Whetstone said.

“Since announcing the formation of this award, we have received plenty of interest and I expect there to be strong nominations before the 15 February 2019 deadline.

“An independent panel will assess the nominations received and select the top five towns to be profiled.”

From April to August, selected towns will feature as ‘Agriculture Town of the Month’ and be shared and promoted across the Brand SA News platform and through social networks.

“We want to uncover and share stories of excellence in activities that have the underpinning goal of growing and promoting primary industries and driving regional development,” Minister Whetstone added. 

The South Australian Regional Showcase is presented by Brand South Australia, with Chief Executive Officer Karen Raffen welcoming the inaugural program. 

Ms Raffen said the upcoming South Australian Regional Showcase would share stories of regional success across channels and demonstrate globally how fantastic regional South Australia is.

“We’ll be delving deeper into the stories of entire towns that are excelling in their primary industries practices, and the impact this has on their communities and around the state,” she said.
