Tatiara makes way for upcoming Bordertown Cup Race Day

The Tatiara district is gearing up to celebrate Bordertown’s huge annual racing day event at the Bordertown racecourse on Sunday December 16.

If horse racing isn’t your thing – don’t halt, because the 2018 Doan Pharmacies Bordertown Cup truly has a little something for everyone.

Activities for the day include the renowned ‘Fashion at the Races’ event for men, women and children, free kids activities, live music and plenty of food and beverage options.

Bordertown Racing Club secretary and event organiser Sonya Lodewyk told the Chronicle the Bordertown races are a much anticipated event for the district each year.

“It’s a huge event and we get people from all across the district,” she said. “We get people from Naracoorte, Keith, Kaniva, etcetera.

“We had over 1000 people last year and we are expecting to get a similar turnout this year – it’s great for the town.”

Sonya also said the annual cup day is an excuse for many locals to gather and reconnect in one place.

“A lot of the young people who have headed in their own direction communicate through social media and usually arrange to all catch up and come together on Bordertown Cup Day,” she said.

“It’s so great to see so many people all in one place and a great opportunity to catch up with people you might not have seen in a while.

“It seems to be really common to see so many locals all in the same space and it turns into a really nice community event.”

Although the Bordertown Racing Club is currently in the process of building new multipurpose facilities, all usual club facilities will be available and can be enjoyed alongside the construction.

For the upcoming event, the racing club will utilise its popular undercover and paved facility ‘Big Top’, where everyone can enjoy the races and get in on the action.

Sonya said all money raised from the event would be pooled back into the club to improve amenities.

“Most of the money made goes into hosting each year’s event but if we do make any excess money it all goes back into the club in order to make each year bigger and better,” she said.

The Bordertown Cup is also an opportunity for guests to bring those fancy frocks and ties out of the woodwork.

“The day definitely provides a chance for locals to dress up and show off some style – but come dressed in whatever you are comfortable in,” Sonya said.

“You can wear whatever you like but it is fun to see everyone dressed up and we usually get a really good response about the fashion.”

Last year, horse ‘Straight Jacket’, trained by Symon Wilde and ridden by Declan Bates, claimed the prestigious cup in front of a bumper crowd.

Sonya said this year, as well as quality racing, guests can expect to find the district’s local catering services Finn’s Fine Food, Coonalpyn Waffles, Mug on the Run and Tolmer Pizza at the cup event.

Marquees for large groups can be pre-booked and are the perfect place for reunions, birthday parties, end of year work shows or just a general get-together.

Children will be kept entertained with free face painting, games and activities. The big man in red might even make an appearance!

To keep the party going, there will be live music after the last race until 7pm and delicious pizzas will be made fresh from the local pizza shop.
