Bordertown and District Basketball Association win big

Bordertown and District Basketball Association will receive $380,000 for a female friendly change room upgrade at the Bordertown and District Basketball Stadium.

The association won the grant to upgrade and build female change rooms as part of the Female Facilities Program.

Bordertown and District Basketball Association president Chris Jefferies is thrilled with the news.

“We are extremely grateful for the grant, our toilet and change room facilities are well below par and this money will help us upgrade them significantly,” Chris said.

Close to 400 people a week use the complex with hockey and soccer sharing facilities in winter as well as cricketers in summer.

“That was also another reason why we were allocated a large chunk of funding due to the stadium being a multi-purpose complex,” Chris said.

The money will be used to upgrade both the current female and male change rooms at the complex, however as the money comes under the FFP, the male change rooms will become unisex.

“I’m thrilled we’re able to give the Bordertown and District Basketball Association this funding for female friendly facilities – it’s fantastic this program supports clubs all over the state – and particularly in regional areas where access to sport is so important in local communities,” said Minister for Recreation and Sport Leon Bignell.

Plans for the upgrade have been drawn up and the new facilities will include four cubicles on both the female and male sides compared to the current two, while showers will be separated to ensure privacy for all users.

“A lot of credit has to go to both Sally Bywater the club’s secretary and Andrew Dowling, committee member, for pushing this application so that the club could receive the grant,” Chris said.

While the final decisions have yet to be made on when the upgrade will take place due to the summer basketball season, building is expected to start before the end of the year.

The basketball association will be holding its AGM at the stadium on Wednesday, August 23 at 7pm for those interested in more information on the upgrade.

Registration day for all seniors and juniors intending to play in the 2017/2018 summer season will be on Monday, August 28 from 3.30pm until 6pm at the stadium.
