On May 13 and 14 Hockey SA hosted the Country Championships tournament at the State Hockey Centre, Gepps Cross.
In 2015 Hockey SA reintroduced the State Country Championships after a long absence from the calendar.
The Championships serve to provide senior players an opportunity to continue representing their associations at a high level and also assists Hockey SA to identify talent from regional areas whilst also strengthening the State Country, Association and local competitions.
A State Country Men’s and Women’s squad are selected with nominations being received from players prior and during the Championships.
Tatiara were able to send a men’s and women’s team to the competition again this year.
Tatiara men played six matches for the tournament, drawing their first game against Yorke Peninsula but losing the other matches.
Their final game against Lower South East was a highlight for the lads, with Tatiara up 2:0 at half time catching LSE off guard.
Unfortunately LSE retaliated in the second half putting on five quick goals in the last 15 minutes of the game.
The Women’s competition of eight teams was divided into two pools. The four games against Yorke Peninsula, Whyalla and Barossa saw the young Tatiara team improve each time, however they were unable to secure a win.
Everyone agreed it was a great weekend of hockey and certainly skill development for the young developing players.
The championship finals were held Sunday afternoon.
Lower South East won the women’s trophy and Port Lincoln took out the shield for the men.
