Bordertown High School student Gemma Nunn has been announced as one of the 2018 ANU Tuckwell Scholarship recipients.
The Australian National University (ANU) has announced the recipients of the 2018 round of Australia’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship, the Tuckwell Scholarship.
As scholarship recipients each of the 25 students from around Australia will receive over $21,000 per year towards their studies for up to five years, as well as mentoring from senior ANU leaders.
The scholarship program was founded in 2013 by philanthropists Graham and Louise Tuckwell.
Graham Tuckwell said he was pleased with the high quality of applications for the 2018 program as well as the diversity among recipients. “What is particularly pleasing is that we are seeing more really strong applicants from regional and remote parts of Australia,” Mr Tuckwell said.
“The scholarship isn’t just about rewarding academic excellence, it’s about finding those future leaders who are already making valuable contributions to their community even at such a young age.”
Louise Tuckwell said choosing the successful applicants could be an emotional process. “The panel's task gets harder and harder, and the hardest thing of all for us is knowing that so many deserving applicants will not receive one of these scholarships,” Mrs Tuckwell said.
“Calling the successful applicants is of course the highlight and a privilege indeed.
“Students can be anywhere when they receive the call and we get very excited and often speechless responses. We were nearly deafened by the screams of an excited mother, who had to be 'put in another room' by her daughter so she could hear us,” she said.
ANU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Schmidt AC, praised the Tuckwell Scholarship winners as some of Australia’s brightest scholars who will help take the nation forward into the future.
“The Tuckwell program has very quickly become ingrained in the campus culture of ANU,” Professor Schmidt said.
Gemma is the only recipient of the scholarship from South Australia in this year’s round of offers.
